PROPOSED REGULATIONS

Licensure + Education = Right to practice in Medical Aesthetics

1) To create minimum safe practice standards of education and licensure requirements in Wisconsin to perform medical aesthetic procedures

  • NP's, PA's, RN's, LPN's, Aestheticians, and cosmetologists


2) Successful completion of training and demonstrated competency includes at a minimum a comprehensive didactic component and a supervised practicum where each procedure is evaluated by a qualified practitioner that possesses the credentials to provide education: 

  • Injectables (Specific to NP/PA/RN/LPN*)

    • Training course minimum of 8 hours neuromodulator course

    • Training course minimum of 12 hours dermal filler/biostimulator course

  • Skin Health / Rejuvenation (Specific to NP/PA/RN/LPN/LE/Cosmetologist) 

    • Course minimum of 12 hours specific to advanced aesthetic procedures (chemical peels, microneedling, radiofrequency, etc)

  • Light Therapy / Laser Treatments (Specific to NP/PA/RN/LPN/LE/Cosmetologist)

    • Training course minimum of 12 hours specific to laser and light modalities 

3) Continuing education standard yearly requirements:

  • Injectables (Specific to NP/PA/RN/LPN*)

    • Injectables / Rheology, anatomy, complication management, assessment, consultations, safety (BBP) 

      • 10  CE per year

  • Skin Health / Rejuvenation (Specific to NP/PA/RN/LPN/LE/Cosmetologist) 

    • Skincare ingredients, treatment protocols, safety (BBP)

      • 6 CE per year

  • Light Therapy / Laser Treatments (Specific to NP/PA/RN/LPN/LE/Cosmetologist)

    • Light and laser science, treatment protocols, safety (BBP)

      • 6 CE per year

4)  APNP SERVING AS MEDICAL DIRECTOR FOR AESTHETIC FACILITIES

An APNP in accordance with state statutes and rules may assume responsibilities as a medical director, overseeing the care and treatment provided by APNP’s, RN’s, LPN’s, certified nursing assistants and unlicensed personnel consistent with the Wisconsin State Nurse Practice Act.  Medical director responsibilities include but are not limited to:

A. Provide health care services including prescribing and dispensing within the APNP’s population focus and role. 

B. APNP must maintain education, competency, and certification for the procedures alongside a collaborating agreement with a medical director.

C. The medical director provides guidance, leadership, and training to staff.

D. The medical director is responsible for review, approval, and maintenance of written policy for all office procedures.

E. Must be available to staff for consultation at any time during business hours, via phone, email, or telehealth at a minimum.  

F.  Must comply with state requirements for the medical director role in outpatient facilities. 

5) Medical directors of which oversee medical spas may be of the following specialty/education requirements:

  • Plastic/ Aesthetic Surgery

  • Ophthalmology

  • Dermatology

  • Facial Plastic Surgery

    Medical Doctor with direct training specific to medical aesthetics (initial training) minimum of:

  • 8-hour neuromodulator

  • 8-hour dermal filler/biostimulator

  • 8-hour light and laser

  • 8-hour skin health/rejuvenation 

  • + 10 hrs CE’s cumulative to medical aesthetics on an annual basis to maintain competency on an annual basis 

A) Medical Director must maintain education, competency, and certification for

the procedures performed.

B). The medical director provides guidance, leadership, and training to staff.

C). The medical director is responsible for review, approval, and

maintenance of written policy for all office procedures.

D). Must be available to staff at any time during business hours (via phone, email, or telehealth at a minimum).
